Lesson Twenty-Two

Picking a domain name and a hosting company to host your new website

The Guru had over 600 registered domain names when we first covered this area in our lessons, but I believe the number of registered.com names he now has, is approaching 1000.

So the lesson that I was about to get was coming from the voice of experience.

Guru J sometimes wakes in the middle of the night and gets on line to register a domain name that has entered his mind.

At the bottom of this section I will share a few of the companies that the Guru recommended to me as domain providers and after all he has tried nearly every major domain name and hosting company
that offers a service on line today.

Guru J covered this lesson by breaking the lesson into two sections.

1. Why do you need a domain name?

2. How do you pick the name?

1. Why do you need a domain name?

A domain name gives your ideas and your business a presence and whatever you are choosing to promote, explain or offer can be represented with your domain.

One of the other great things about purchasing your own domain name is that it comes with a matching email address that can be used in the promotion of your name.

The thing that convinced me to get my first domain in the early days was that not only did having my own name increase my professionalism but it also gave me an identity on line and something that I could control.

Imagine this scenario, you have a butcher’s shop that offers specialty high end products to catering firms and at a function that you have attended a potential customer says to you they are really interested in some of the lines that you have on offer and asks you "what is your web address friend?" Your reply is meatman.blogspot.blog.com/33333789 and your potential customer’s look of confusion sums it up. He is never going to remember you or your crazy blog address is he?

How about you answer www.greatestmeat.com and produce a simple business card with the web address and your name on it, the chances of gaining a brand new client for your shop have probably quadrupled and then when your prospect visits your website we do all the things we have learned in earlier lessons like.

1. Offer a free report about your industry;

2. capture the visitors details;

3. give them a special bonus for purchasing online;

4. Thank them and begin a relationship.

2. How do you pick the name?

This is not an easy question to answer when so many of the good ones are already taken but the Guru gave me some tips about this process.

The first thing that Guru J said that I should do is to start writing down a list of keywords about the subject or product my domain is going to be about.

I always use two products that funnily enough are produced by two brothers Matt and Brad Callen. They are keyword elite and HyperVRE both brilliant software programs for Internet marketers.

So anyway I use the above tools to search for the best keywords and then I break the list down until I get to about ten possible keywords that I can combine together like:

about cheap holidays.com” and “about 4thof july.com” or “list/boy.com” or “clear/messages.com”. I could go on but I think you get my point.

The reason I particularly like to use the keyword tools featured above when putting new domain names together is that most search engines will include you in their results once you have a domain name and this is a fantastic way for subscribers and customers to find you.

In fact if you give your domain name some proper consideration I believe it is possibly the best investment you can make on line.
It will cost you as little as a few cents per day and can drastically increase your traffic volume of visitors.

Remember that once you get your head around a few of the search engine optimization strategies available like the keyword targeting we covered back in Lesson 10 your traffic can grow exponentially even without spending on advertising.

So to recap by getting a domain for yourself you will achieve the following things

1. Brand your business or concept with your own URL;

2. get your own branded email address;

3. Boost traffic to your website.

Now to Hosting your brand new domain name

Now that you have spent days analyzing keywords and come up with the perfect domain name for your new website you need to select a good hosting company and there are literally hundreds of them out there wanting your business.

Many of the hosting companies offer very cheap packages for as little as four dollars per month but I would remind you of something the guru has always said to me, "Paul begin as you wish to continue". And by that he means spend a little more and plan for some growth in the future.

Most of the cheaper hosting plan companies offer plans with very small disc space and data transfer capabilities and as you are learning, many of the key aspects of building a large opt-in subscriber list remember Lesson 16. You will soon need to upgrade to a bigger and better hosting plan that has enough space and support options in place to cover your growing business.
